Crisis & Disaster Response

We use the CISM model for debriefing victims of trauma or vicarious trauma soon after a traumatic event of any kind. It can be for an individual or for a group.

Best practices state that a "defusing" of the traumatic experience happen within the first 24 hours and a full debriefing occur within the first 72 hours to mitigate long-term symptoms and PTSD.

This treatment is different than counseling/therapy and is usually a one-time structured debriefing.

If trauma victims continue to have distressing symptoms that do not abate past a few weeks following the event, then therapy is recommended to support their healing and recovery.
